I bought it on sale for $20 yesterday. Today I want my $2o (and 4 hours) back. Am I missing something? I played it for a while last night and thought it seemed cool, but that I would get into the good stuff as I played more. I played some more this morning, and I’m over it... searching for stuff that you actually need takes for ever, my armor is out of power, every time I try to go to a new place I get killed. Just seems like the same thing over and over like ARK.

I relied on the armor so little during the first part of the game. wait until you have like 20 power cores at least.
as for getting killed constantly, i try to carry a melee, a machine gun, and a sniper. rarely anything else at the start (maybe a shotgun)
scout the area before hand and snipe what you from a different place/room.
once you are inside and sniping becomes less of an option, bludgeon everything and anything you see to death.
and invest in strength. it becomes SO annoying to run out of space. use your companion for that as well.

I agree that fallout 4 want anywhere near as good as the other games. I did beat it but I really have no interest in playing it again.

I haven’t come across a sniper rifle (or the means to build one). It just seems so slow and has already frustrated me to the point of handing off the controller to my wife. Maybe I’ll pick it back up, but I doubt it. A game has to be fun right out of the gate for me.

That’s true, and I generally hate RPGs. So I dunno what I was thinking here. I just saw that it was $20 and remembered that it was “all the rage” when it came out haha. Black Friday got me and I didn’t even leave the house.

I didn’t think it was a bad game but it was nowhere near as good as Fallout New Vegas or Fallout 3.

its the same thing with Skyrim. the first little bit is not all that fun.
Once you get to your 6 or 7th killed dragon though...oh boy.
If you can get your hands on a copy of Doom, I LOVED the new release. everything that made the original doom great, with modern graphics, a (somewhat) interesting story line, tidbits on Doomguys past, and lots of little secrets to be discovered.

I have a mental block about that haha. I just won’t do it. NHL 16 is collecting dust because when I got it last year I couldn’t win a single game, so I turned the difficulty down one notch and won 11-0...same level of fun ...0

It’s the world of Fallout that draws fans back time and time again. Whatever their faults, Bethesda’s world building on top of existing Fallout lore is top notch. And they manage to tell a decent story as well.
As for the power armor, I think they put it that early in game as a tease. It’s not until later you can afford more power cores. I don’t know if you’ve ever played any of the previous games, but remember LOOT EVERYTHING! Unlike previous games, where you could afford to stop looting everything once you reached a certain point, Fallout 4's settlement system means you have an endless resource sink in addition to being able to break everything down. If you can’t use it, sell it or hoard it. This is why carry weight and indirectly strength is such an important SPECIAL stat.
As for dying; this game isn’t that hard, especially when using VATS. Take cover and VATS away. Since this game doesn’t feature weapon degradation, there’s no reason not to use VATS.

I think it was an amazing game. I loved the atmosphere and tone, the soundtrack, the incredibly detailed world (even after spending several days in total completing the game, I have the feeling of not having seen even half of it) and the freedom you have in it. I regularly paused for a while just to enjoy the amazing scenery. If you like exploring things, this is pretty much as good as it gets. And there are some very memorable characters that you just like being around with. I never had the feeling that it was particularly hard either. I couldn’t recommend the it more, especially for that price. I can imagine people complaining about Fallout 3/Vegas being better in some aspects, but as someone who has never played them, I think it was a brilliant game.

Bethesda’s AI is a lot less dumb than EA’s. So turning down the difficulty isn’t that bad as to ruin the gameplay.
My hint would be to not use power armor. Previous Fallout games throttled this by making you find a faction and learn to use it. Now they just take away the power cores. But about 8 hours in, you will have the ability to break the game’s economy and have all the cores you could ever want.
Although the AI complaint is why NHL 16 is not being played on my console either. It’s either “There’s no way you could score that many goals” Win 25-4 or “there’s no way you suck that bad” and lose 0-12.

I received FO4 back when it came out as a gift. Played it for an hour or two, fucked everything up so bad that I had to restart, played it for another half hour, and then shelfed it. Just not my kind of game. I feel you on what you don’t like about it.

I’m not a fan of vanilla Skyrim, but I have over 300 hours into it because of how much better/different the mods make it.
Fallout 4 may be similar for some people. I always liked the setting/exploration/landscapes, so I liked it right off the bat, but maybe you need to consider some mods to tailor the experience to your expectations :)

It’s a pretty shitty game, honestly. New Vegas is the only FPS Fallout game that’s worth the time to play.
That said, F4 does get better after about 40-80 hours of play. Once you get through all the initial garbage and finally get to know all the factions to some extent, really.
Aside from a few minor easter eggs, it doesn’t even have any decent humor. Much like F3, Bethesda shows that they lack any creativity, let alone an understanding of the Fallout universe. The fact they purchased the rights allowing them to make/sell games under the name doesn’t mean they actually understand what they have.

New Vegas is easily the best of the FPS games. It has the most dark humor and weird mind-bending situations that you had in the original couple games.
I never finished 3 because it was just too tedious. All that tunnel maze garbage just started driving me crazy.

This is the only Fallout game where the main character was ex-mil, and therefore they knew how to use power armor already.
The change history-wise is that now it all needs these cores that burn out pretty quickly. In the older games power armor came as a set (not this crazy random part collecting process) and you didn’t need to find power cores because the armor had a built in power supply that would run it for centuries. The time period of Fallout 4 was set after those power supplies no longer worked (which makes me wonder why there are cores sitting around everywhere and most sets of armor have been modified to take the same cores).

It’s a vast open world game but if you wander outside of the main story line to early it gets really hard and unfair really fast. Iirc the enemy difficulty doesn’t scale to your level so if you wander to a late game area your screwed. I did main story line until I got to the baseball stadium then I started to do side quest and level up. The mystery main story is worth sticking with. I enjoyed it. I’m still playing it between BF1 sessions

The first few hours are slow as all hell...frustrating at bare minimum. However, once you get good weapons things get more fun. Honestly, like any Bethesda game, it’s best played with mods.
The “hours played” on mine is about up to a month’s worth of hours now. It’s not the best game ever, but it has its merits and I love the stupid thing.

I hate Bethesda so much. Their game writers are shit and their engines are ugly archaic garbage. If it wasn’t for them owning/consolidating so much of the RPG market, there’s no way they would be even slightly competitive... Hell, they probably would have went under long ago.

So if your PC is female, and is an attorney in Boston, then what’s the explanation for being able to use power armor? Harvard Law made students take a power armor training course? ;)
Also, previous games have had T-45 and T-51 series armor (which are in 4). It’s just as though Bethesda simply retconned the mechanic to how they wanted to pace the game. (Timeline is 10-11 years after Fallout 3 in DC, hence why Dr. Li is in both games)
Nothing wrong with that, mind you. It makes a decent explanation as to the mechanics, but was previously hand waved due to how the designers wanted to pace things.
Different game, different design objective.

I haven’t tried the female character... I somehow assumed they just reversed the gender roles. Was she not ex-mil?

It’s not explicitly stated that she is a vet the way her husband is. There are wild ass guesses that she is ex-JAG or similar, but nothing is concrete beyond that she has a law degree, and was planning to go back to practicing law.

I wasn’t very impressed either
I feel like it got way overhyped and couldn’t possibly deliver on the expectations people had for it.
I blame all these YouTubers and social media hyping it because they were so excited.

I’m surprised that Bethesda didn’t think it through better (although, realistically, they did a pretty awful job with this game anyhow) and made her like a military nurse/medic or something that would have made her having power armor skills seem reasonable.

Well... it’s a bit different from previous Fallouts in that your armor isn’t something you wear all the time since power cores are rare. You’re supposed to save it for hard missions, supposedly.
I enjoyed it. However the moment I finished the main quest, I lost all interest.

You should follow the story :) The story is supposed to take you along a reasonably balanced, fair, interesting path through the game. Where you don’t spend hours searching for random loot or getting killed by Deathclaws.
Also I think the power armor from the start of the game is meant to work like that, like how racing games give you a fast car for 1 race before you buy your shitheap. It’s a tease, it’s meant to run out of power so you can’t use it all the time.
